xx Centuries of Art @ Your Library - J.M.W. Turner and the English Romantic Landscape - 7:30 p.m. - WL Theatre
Joseph Mallord William Turner was an artist without equal. For him, the landscape was the great stage on which was played out the cosmic struggle between man and nature. Precocious in talent and singular in vision, his exquisite oils and watercolors seem to be made of sheer veils of radiant light and translucent hues. Whether depicting the awesome violence of a storm at sea, the shimmering mists of a Venetian lagoon, or the final voyage of a valiant ship, Turner's paintings exhibit the drama, beauty, and pathos that made him the quintessential painter of English Romanticism. Presented by the Library and This Century Art Gallery, and the Gallery's partnership program with the VMFA. A reception will follow.  Reservations are not required.  This lecture series is presented by the Library and This Century Art Gallery, and is made possible through the Gallery's partnership program with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA). A reception provided by This Century Art Gallery will follow the program. - FREE  See also: http://www.wrl.org/programs/mindfood.html#art
